What will you do as a volunteer?

You’ll be involved in a variety of conservation tasks. We do a lot of grassland management which involves scything, raking and making hay with our manual hay baler. You could be pruning bushes and shrubs, cutting back overgrown vegetation or building compost bins to compost all the cuttings! In winter you might get the chance to lay churchyard hedges, learning this old technique that rejuvenates and restore natural boundaries. We plant and maintain new hedges and look after ancient trees by clearing competing vegetation, for example by bramble bashing. We’ve restored and rebuilt many dry stone walls by offering training courses. We help make wildlife homes with habitat piles, hibernacula and bug hotels. Have a look at the programme to find out what we doing this year.

A typical day

We usually go out on Tuesday in south Shropshire and on Wednesday in north Shropshire. Look out too for our Saturday task days. We start at 10am and finish by 3pm. It’s a good idea to bring food and drink although we are usually provided with hot and cold drinks, cakes and biscuits and sometimes lunch by the church. You can do as much as you feel comfortable with and stay as long as you like. We always have a variety of different tasks so there’s always something you can do.
