Swift wow factor – By sleeping with half of its brain at a time, a swift lives its life in the air, coming down only for a short period each year to breed.

It is difficult to give an estimate of the decline of this amazing bird in Britain, but everyone agrees that numbers are going down. Scientific research is helping to identify key areas for swift conservation.

Swifts need homes and the tall buildings of churches, chapels, mosques, synagogues and temples can be ideal. A burial ground, managed with wildlife in mind makes a good hunting ground for swifts searching for insects.
